Updated: Oct 18, 2024

Hey there, fellow adventurers in the land of new parenthood!

One of the things that surprised my partner and me was navigating the world of baby products. When we first ventured into a baby store, it felt like stepping into a foreign land. Rows and rows of adorable (and sometimes perplexing) items, and we had no idea where to begin! We had no close friends or family with babies, so we were truly on our own.

To help you avoid that "deer in the headlights" feeling, I've compiled a list of 16 newborn essentials that I found incredibly helpful during those early days. From soothing those inevitable diaper rashes to ensuring a safe and comfortable sleep, these products are here to support you and your little one on this amazing journey.

Diaper Duty Heroes:

  • 1) Diaper (nappy) rash cream:  A must-have for preventing and soothing those sensitive little bottoms. Look for creams with zinc oxide for added protection.

  • Frequent Changes: Change those diapers often to minimize contact with moisture and irritants.

  • Gentle Cleansing: Use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic wipes or simply warm water and a soft washcloth to clean your baby's bottom.

  • Airtime: Let that little bottom air out whenever possible. A few minutes of diaper-free time can work wonders!

  • Clean & Dry:  Always apply diaper cream to a clean and dry bottom.

  • Thin Layer:  A thin layer of cream is all you need. Too much can trap moisture and worsen the rash.

  • Every Change:  Apply cream at every diaper change, especially if your baby is prone to rashes.

  • If the rash doesn't improve after a few days of home treatment, or if it seems to be getting worse, contact your pediatrician.

  • 2) Gentle baby wipes:

  •  Baby wipes are incredibly versatile for cleaning up messes, wiping hands and faces, and, of course, diaper changes. Look for fragrance-free, alcohol-free and hypoallergenic options to minimize the risk of skin irritation.

  • 3) Diaper (nappy) pail:  Keeps those dirty diapers contained and your nursery smelling fresh.

  • Diaper pails are a popular item for new parents, but are they truly essential? Honestly, it depends on your living situation and personal preferences.

  • There are many different diaper pails on the market, so it's worth doing a bit of research to find one that suits

    your needs and budget.

  • Consider factors like:

  • Capacity:  How many diapers does it hold?

  • Odor Control Features:  Does it have special filters or bags to help with odor?

  • Ease of Use:  How easy is it to change the bag and empty the pail?

  •  Even with a diaper pail, it's still a good idea to empty it regularly to prevent odors from building up.

  • 4) Diaper (Nappy) bags:

plastic nappy bags

  •  Disposable or reusable, nappy bags make it easy to carry and dispose of dirty diapers discreetly. You definitely need this for diaper changes on the go.

 Bathtime Bliss:

  • 5) Baby bathtub:  Baby Bathtub is a Must-Have:

  • It provides a secure and comfortable space for your little one, minimizing the risk of slips and spills.

  • Many baby bathtubs are designed with contoured support to keep your newborn in a comfortable and safe position.

  • When choosing a baby bathtub, consider one that can grow with your little one. Some models have features like adjustable inserts or removable slings that can accommodate your baby as they get bigger. This can save you money and space in the long run.

  • 6) Soft washcloths: The washcloths are essential for so many newborn moments:

Start their day with a gentle wipe-down to clean those sleepy eyes and sweet little cheeks. A soft, damp washcloth is a lifesaver for tackling those inevitable stuffy noses.

  •  Tip: be sure to wash it first! Choose a mild, fragrance-free detergent specifically designed for babies.

  • 7) Hooded towel:

  • This is an essential item for new parents to keeps the little one's warm and cozy after bath, pool, or beach outing.

  • And because your baby's skin is so delicate, it's important to choose a towel that's gentle and absorbent.

  •  I'm a big fan of Cotton towels for my little one. They're incredibly soft, absorbent!  Using a separate towel for your baby helps prevent the spread of germs and keeps their delicate skin healthy.

  • Mama's Tip:  Always wash new baby towels before using them for the first time. This helps remove any lingering residues from the manufacturing process and ensures they're extra gentle on your baby's skin.

  • 8) Baby shampoo & wash:  When it comes to baby wash, there are different approaches, and what works best can vary from family to family.

  • Some parents prefer to stick with just water for the first few weeks or months, believing that newborns don't need any soap. And that's perfectly fine! However, I personally find that a gentle baby wash helps to keep my little one clean and fresh, especially after a particularly messy diaper change or a day of play.

If you choose to use a baby wash, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You don't need a lot of baby wash to get your little one clean. A small amount lathered onto a soft washcloth is usually enough.

  • Gentle Formulas: Look for washes that are specifically designed for newborns and are free of harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes.

  • Natural Ingredients:  I always try to choose products with more natural ingredients, such as plant-based cleansers and soothing botanical extracts.

  • Tear-Free:  No one wants a crying baby during bathtime! Tear-free formulas help prevent irritation if the wash gets into your baby's eyes.

  •  Grooming Goodies:

  • 9) Baby nail clippers or file:  Both clippers and files have their pros and cons.

Haakaa electric nail file
  • For us, we started with baby nail clippers, which worked well for the first couple of months. But as our little one became more active (and a much lighter sleeper!), those clippers became a bit of a challenge. One particularly squirmy nail-trimming session ended with an accidental nick of her tiny thumb, and let's just say there were a few tears (from both of us!).

  • After that, we switched to an electric nail file, and it's been a game-changer! It's so much easier to use on a wiggly baby, and I feel much more confident that I won't accidentally cut her delicate skin. Plus, it's quick and quiet, which is a bonus when you're dealing with a sleepy (or easily startled) little one.

  • 10) Soft-bristled hairbrush:

  • Those wispy little hairs might not seem like much, but they deserve a gentle touch! A soft-bristled baby hairbrush is perfect for caring for your little one's delicate scalp.

  • The soft bristles prevent any irritation or discomfort, making it perfect for those first few months.

  • Gentle brushing can help stimulate blood circulation to the scalp, which may promote healthy hair growth

  • Brushing your baby's hair can be a soothing and relaxing experience for both of you.

  • 11) Nasal aspirator:

Nose Frida baby
  • Unlike us grown-ups, babies can't blow their noses. This means that when those little noses get stuffy, it can make feeding, sleeping, and even just breathing uncomfortable. A baby nasal aspirator helps clear nasal passages and facilitates easier breathing for your little one. Whether you're dealing with a winter cold or just a bit of everyday congestion, these handy tools can help your little one breathe easier.

  • Personally, I opted for an electric nasal aspirator, and I've been really happy with it. It's quick, efficient, and much easier to use than a bulb aspirator, especially when dealing with a squirmy baby.

No matter which type you choose, a nasal aspirator is a must-have for any parent.

Health & Safety Essentials:

Thermometer

  • 12) Thermometer:  As new parents, we were definitely a bit unsure about the best way to take our baby's temperature accurately.

Braun Thermo scan

I was advised at the hospital to use a standard digital thermometer under the arm for the first three months, as newborns are still regulating their body temperature.

While under the tongue is generally considered the most accurate method for older babies and toddlers (although, let's be honest, getting a newborn to cooperate with that is a whole other challenge!), armpit readings are a safe and reliable option for those early weeks.

After those first few months, we switched to a digital ear thermometer, which is much quicker and easier to use. Both types of thermometers can be accurate, but it's important to choose a reputable brand and follow the instructions carefully.

Mama's Tip:  Keep a record of your baby's temperature readings so you can track any changes and share the information with your doctor if needed.

  • 13) Baby medicine dispenser: Okay, let's be honest, giving medicine to a tiny human can be a challenge!

Some babies take it like champs, while others... well, let's just say they have their own opinions about it. My little one definitely falls into the latter category. Trying to get her to swallow medicine used to be a battle of epic proportions, complete with tears, cries, and more than a few spills. While it might not seem like an absolute essential, trust me, this little invention is a game-changer. It makes administering medicine so much easier and safer.

 Feeding Fundamentals:

  • 14) Burp cloths:  Essential for those messy mealtimes.

  • 15) Bibs:  They're simple yet essential, and they can make a big difference in keeping your baby's clothes (and your sanity!) intact.

  • As you know, newborns can be messy eaters. They spit up, drool, that's where bibs come in handy!

When choosing a bib for your newborn, consider the following:

  • Material: Look for bibs made from soft, absorbent materials like cotton or bamboo.

  • Size: Choose a size that's appropriate for your baby's age and size.

Tip: Never put your baby to sleep with a bib on.

Bibs can pose a choking or suffocation hazard if they become loose or tangled while your baby is sleeping. It's best to remove any bibs, hats, beanies, or scarves before placing your baby down for a nap or bedtime.

  • 16) Baby Bottle Sterilizer

A baby bottle sterilizer is an essential tool for ensuring that your baby's feeding equipment, such as bottles and pacifiers, is properly sterilized to prevent harmful bacteria. This is especially important for newborns and infants with developing immune systems.
